Top 5 Surf Spots to check out with your campervan

Imagine picking up a ‘top of the range’ VW Campervan, putting your surfboards in the back and driving off for a week of surf, adventure and freedom...

The South-West is one of the best places in the world for surfers. We might not be able to match California or Australia for weather, but the stunning scenery and brilliant surf more than make up for it.

It’s winter season, the best time for surfing in the South West; better waves, fewer crowds and cheaper (if not free) parking by the beach.

As there are so many surf spots; we have put together our ‘Top 5 Surf Spots’ to help you with planning your seven-day getaway, starting with picking up your luxury, ‘top of the range’ VW Campervan in Exeter, Devon.

Have we missed somewhere you love to surf? Let us know in the comments below; we would love to hear from you!

Check out www.eyeballhq.tv for a daily forecast of all surf spots mentioned in this post.

North Devon

Pick up your campervan and get ready for a week of freedom! North Devon is known for its beautiful scenic coastline and top surfing spots catering for all levels; it has it all.

Woolacombe

Known for spectacular sunset surfs, bars and restaurants, BBQ’s on the beach and many campsites to park your campervan, it’s a great place to begin your surfing adventure. Woolacombe has an award winning beach and like our campervans is dog-friendly!

The west facing beach works on all tides, best in Easterly winds. Home to many surf schools and equipment hire makes it perfect for beginners and the pros!

Saunton Sands

Saunton Sands is also a good place to begin surfing. Known for lines of waves stacking up from the shoreline all the way to the horizon it’s beautiful, and with the occasional pod of dolphins swimming by, there’s nothing quite like it!

Saunton is popular with world class longboarders due to its lovely, clean, mellow wave which improves with a light offshore wind to steepen the faces. It works on all stages of the tide, but tends to be best on the push of the incoming tide.

This beach can be found between Croyde and Braunton, so if you stay in Croyde it is just a minute drive away!

There’s a surf shop on the beach, plus a cafe and restaurant - how convenient for a post- surf hot chocolate to warm you up!

Croyde

Renowned as one of the UK’s best beach breaks, Croyde has become a retreat for beach lovers and surfers. We love it in the winter months missing the summer crowds, and more spaces in the car park to park up your campervan!

If you’re an advanced surfer looking for barreling waves, Croyde is perfect for this at low-tide on the right peaks. As the tide fills in, the beach becomes more’ beginner friendly’.

There are many campsites near to the beach for overnight stays with your campervan.

Enjoy a hearty meal, pint or hot drink at ‘The Thatch Pub’ post-surf. It is one of our favourites; cosy and warm with their log burning fires, and delicious lasagne!

Putsborough

So you’ve jumped into your campervan and checked the surf forecast. While everywhere else along the coast is blown out; Putsborough is looking good! This spot is sheltered from South Westerly winds and provides a nice clean wave, huge car park on the beach for the campervan and a lovely little cafe overlooking the surf to reminisce about your session.

Now it’s time to head to Cornwall, surf capital!

Cornwall

Cornwall is known for the quality and variety of surfing beaches. We have chosen some overlooked surf spots that we love!

Perranporth

Best at low tide, this beach provides a year-round experience for beginners and advanced surfers.

Perranporth usually has 5 or 6 great peaks at any one time and is full of opportunities for beginners working on their techniques.

Watering Hole Beach Bar serves food and drinks for you too. There’s free parking in the winter for your campervan just a stone’s throw from the beach.

Praa Sands

Just a 45-minute drive from Perranporth, you’ll find Praa Sands, a Southern jewel.

Choose from many campsites near to the beach, park your campervan and get in the water! We think you’ll love the atmosphere at Praa Sands. Beach BBQs are allowed on the golden, mile long, sandy beach. There are plenty of nice places to eat, and the beach is dog- friendly in the winter months!

Sunsets over the ocean, great surf and barrels at high tide, we think it suits the more intermediate or advanced surfer.
